From abundant wildlife, rugged hills to quick access to either Kansas City, MO or Des Moines Iowa on Interstate 35, there is something in Pattonsburg for everyone. When the citizens of Pattonsburg rebuilt after the "Great Flood of 1993" they designed the community to be pedestrian-friendly – everyone is no more than a five-minute walk from downtown. Housing for the elderly is sited in the center of town so that older residents do not become isolated from the town’s daily activities. The commercial and industrial zone is positioned closest to the interstate, while Main Street was set farther back from the highway so that it has a quieter, slower-paced, feel to it. Following a rather non-traditional design Pattonsburg has recreated some of the best aspects of the old Pattonsburg’s Main Street. The retail section of the new town, for example, is a single-walled structure, but each business has its own entrance and the height of the facade varies as it did in the old town. |
